Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a staff editor in the Photography department. The position will be based in Washington, D.C.

The ideal candidate is an experienced photo editor with a strong demonstrable passion for photography, journalism and visual storytelling of all kinds, and should possess a broad knowledge of the current photographic landscape. Additionally, this editor should possess a deep interest in and understanding of American politics and government, and want to convey the world of Washington to our readers with images that go beyond press briefings and photo sprays.

The position entails assigning, editing and publishing images for multiple platforms of The New York Times. Excellent news judgment, sophisticated visual taste, and high comfort level with a fast-paced production environment are required. This person needs to work productively with staff photographers, stringers, agencies and all other sources of pictures, as well as editors, designers, reporters and producers from all sections of the newsroom. He/she must be a team player and a good communicator, and must initiate and develop ideas for pictures and picture stories.

The candidate should possess exceptional technical skills and a facility for learning new technology.

A minimum of 3-5 years of news photo editing experience is required.

This schedule may include weekends and nights.

This is a Guild position and may include night and weekend work.
